A lot of our clients come in and tell us that they struggle when it comes to curling their hair at home. They love their cut and style when they leave the salon, but have difficulty recreating the same look at home, day after day.
Listen ladies, we hear you! It’s tough to curl your hair at home as a beginner. But we want you to love your cut and style every day as much as you love it when you walk out of our doors, so here are some handy tips to curl your hair at home.
Tips For Curling Your Hair At Home
#1. Start With Protectant!
This may not necessarily make the process easier, but it does greatly affect your hair’s health. There are lots of great heat protectants on the market, and we have plenty of different ones in the salon for you to bring home. We love the Oligo 18 in 1 Hair Beautifier or the Joico Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Creme.
A protectant does exactly what it sounds like: it protects your hair from the heat damage that results when you curl it.
#2. Do A Cold Run First
Before you go in to curl your hair for the first time, you might want to practice your technique with a cold iron. That way, you don’t put extra heat stress on your hair while you figure out the logistics.
And of course, you can’t burn your hand or neck with a cold iron!
#3. Get Going
So let’s get started with the actual curling!
Section your hair off, starting with the base, and clip off other sections. That way you don’t miss anything!
You’ll want to start at the base of your hair and slowly work the iron down your hair. Work all the way down to the ends so you hair doesn’t get a strange, kinky texture.
#4. Choose Your Weapon Wisely
When choosing your curling iron, you have to think about what you want the end product to look like.
Do you want loose, sexy waves? Go for a bigger barrel.
Want tighter, springy curls? A smaller barrel will be perfect.
Just remember that your curls will loosen as the day goes on!
#5. Act Fast!
Another important thing to remember is to only keep the curling iron in your hair for 10 to 15 seconds. Anything longer and you could fry your hair!
#6. Add The Finishing Touches
And finally, you can run your fingers through your hair so it looks more natural and undone. Finish off with any products you like, like hairspray to hold the style or a texturizing spray to give you some volume and life!
Remember, Practice Makes Perfect
Of course, your hair may not turn out just the way you want it the first time you try. That’s to be expected! Like everything else, curling your hair takes practice and experience. But if you follow our tips for curling your hair at home, we promise that in no time, you’ll look like you just stepped off the pages of a magazine!
